Ramona Maharaj City of Hamilton

ESL stands for English as a Second Language. Teachers in this field help students whose first language isn’t English in writing, reading and conversing effectively. They approach teaching from a real-life perspective, sometimes focusing on job-related and conversational communication skills. They can work both in English speaking countries, for students trying to assimilate, and in non-English speaking countries to help students learn a new language that isn’t typically used in everyday life.

Being an ESL teacher can be difficult for some new teachers as they not only have to teach students new material, they have to deal with language barriers and other issues that come along with the student not being able to fully understand the instruction. This can be especially difficult for a teacher that does not speak the student’s native language, which is known to happen. Often times there are not enough ESL teachers available for each student that speak the same language, especially if the student speaks an uncommon language to the place they are in. A French speaking student in South Florida for example.

But successful teachers are able to find innovative ways to connect with students, and provide them with a safe environment where they feel comfortable learning. It requires teachers to give ESL students more time to process questions, ask questions in different ways so the student can understand, use non-verbal ways for students to learn and demonstrate their knowledge, allow and respect students that are silent or hesitate to speak in the new language, and take time to address students on an individual basis.

ESL teachers have a challenging job. But they are some of the most in demand teachers, whether at home or abroad.Ramona Maharaj City of Hamilton loves being an ESL teacher and helping students learn English.

Teaching abroad is a unique opportunity, but it is one that comes with its own set of challenges as well. That is why if you are interested in teaching abroad, there are a few skills you should learn first. Instructing students from other countries is a special challenge because they have different requirements and expectations. Learning which students respond to what behavior is a key part of being a successful teacher abroad.

Ramona Maharaj City of Hamilton

Ramona Maharaj from the City of Hamilton knows that learning what not to do when teaching abroad is as important as learning the right things to do. One thing that you should avoid when teaching in other countries is trying to make a student stand out from the class. According to I-to-I.com’s article, “The Do’s and Don’ts of Teaching Abroad”, “American and English students might welcome the opportunity to show off their knowledge in front of the class but this isn't necessarily the case overseas.” A significant amount of countries consider speaking out and answering questions in class to be boastful, and is considered a frowned upon behavior.

Ramona Maharaj from the City of Hamilton has become a successful English teacher abroad thanks to experience and determination. She learned the many nuances of her craft necessary to have a good curriculum.

Ramona Maharaj from the City of Hamilton Explains How to Teach Abroad

One of the things that makes Ramona Maharaj from the City of Hamilton unique from other English teachers is that she often instructs abroad. This means that she has been to many different countries to teach her craft. Teaching abroad presents a unique challenge to the instructor, one that requires a specialized skillset. That is why experienced and dedicated teachers like Ramona are so valued in the field. Knowing a few subtle teaching nuances can be the difference between a successful semester, and one where many students have not learned or grown in a satisfactory manner. That is why if you are looking to teach abroad, there are some things that you should learn first.

Ramona Maharaj City of Hamilton

Ramona Maharaj from the City of Hamilton knows that being successful at teaching abroad is about adaptation. Learning how to accommodate the unique needs of each of your students will really help them grow in the classroom. In fact, according to I-to-I.com’s article, “The Dos and Don’ts of Teaching Abroad”, “Different nationalities have different preferences.” A good example of this is the Japanese, who like to take more time than most students to consider a question before answering. An impatient teacher may assume while working with Japanese students that they do not know the answer to the question and answer it for them. This can disrupt the learning process.

Ramona Maharaj City of Hamilton knows that it takes a unique set of skills in order to be successful when teaching abroad. One of those necessary skills is the ability to adapt.

Ramona Maharaj from the City of Hamilton - Advice for Teaching Abroad

One of the thing that sets Ramona Maharaj from the City of Hamilton apart from many other English teachers is that she often instructs abroad. That means that she has to travel to various parts of the world frequently in order to carry out the requirement of her job. While this can be a fun and unique experience, it also offers a challenge that many other teachers do not have to face. That is because each new location she teaches in has a unique cultural background and native language. That means they have different expectations from educational institutions. So Ramona must adapt based on where she is, as proper manners and etiquette differ greatly depending on where she is in the world.
Ramona Maharaj City of Hamilton
While Ramona Maharaj of the City of Hamilton enjoys teaching abroad, it requires her to learn a few special skillsets as well. One important aspect of teaching abroad is to always dress appropriately. In America it is often considered acceptable for teachers to dress in casual clothing such as t-shirts and jeans. However, there are many parts of the world where this would be considered unprofessional, and even tarnish a teacher’s reputation. In Korea for instance, it is generally believed that darker colors and clothing is appropriate for an authority figure. Also, in Morocco, a female teacher should not wear things like short skirts or sleeveless blouses. Understanding cultural nuances is an important step to successfully teaching abroad.

Another way that Ramona Maharaj of the City of Hamilton has been teaching abroad successfully is by knowing the proper way to behave in each country she visits. Behavior expectations vary a considerable amount depending on what nation, country, or even specific city Ramona visits. One good example of this is China. In China, the culture places high value on things like politeness and formality. Often things that would seem normal by American students, would seem undignified and unbecoming to Chinese students. For example, in China it isn’t considered professional for teachers to address students by their first name, to drink coffee at their desks, or put their feet on a desk.

Being a successful English teacher teaching abroad is something that took Ramona Maharaj from the City of Hamilton a considerable amount of time to achieve. It requires a kind of experience and unique skillset that simply is not taught in conventional education programs. That is why experience is such a valuable asset for teachers like Ramona. This allows them to understand unique and subtle cultural differences everywhere she goes. This knowledge has also helped her implement a better core curriculum that ends with both her, and her students being more knowledgeable by the end of the course and semester.

Ramona Maharaj - Leaving the City of Hamilton

Ramona Maharaj left the City of Hamilton and moved to Fort Lauderdale to earn a Master’s degree in English at Florida Atlantic University. Maharaj has always loved books and writing, and she believes that a degree from FAU will allow her to follow her passion for the rest of her life. She plans on working as an English professor and write her own stories and criticism after she completes her degree. So far, she has loved Fort Lauderdale because of the beautiful beaches, people, and weather.

Ramona Maharaj City of Hamilton
The Fort Lauderdale area was sparsely populated for about a hundred and fifty years after the Spanish ceded Florida to the British to settle the Seven Years’ War in Europe. The native tribes there had thinned out by the mid-18th century. By the time the first United States stockade was constructed in the area in 1838, there were virtually no white settlers. In the 1830s, the New River Settlement began, with about 70 settlers in the Fort Lauderdale area. When Seminole Native Americans attacked the settlement’s Justice of the Peace, William Cooley’s farm, killing his wife and children in 1836, most of the white settlers fled. Fort Lauderdale was abandoned after the conclusion of the Seminole War in 1842, and organized development of the area didn’t start again until 1893.

Ramona Maharaj City of Hamilton was fascinated to learn about the history of Fort Lauderdale before she moved there from the City of Hamilton. She loves her new home, and she hopes to complete her Master’s program soon.

Ramona Maharaj - An English Major from the City of Hamilton

Ramona Maharaj moved from the City of Hamilton to attend the English graduate program at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, not far from her adoptive home in Fort Lauderdale. Maharaj wanted to be an English major since her time as a reporter for her local high school’s newspaper. She has loved to read and write for as long as she can remember. But an English degree can be beneficial for those who aren’t bookworms as well. For anyone who wants to run their own business or become a lawyer or journalist, earning an English degree can be a great start to a promising career.

Ramona Maharaj City of Hamilton

English classes teach students how to write effectively and to read closely. Both of these skills are often overlooked, but business leaders, lawyers, and journalists all have to be proficient at reading comprehension and writing clearly and concisely. An English degree can be a great precursor to an advanced law degree, a degree in journalism, or an advanced business degree. English majors can take their reading, writing, and editing skills and create their own business if they desire. Freelancers can make excellent wages working for themselves with individual clients in a variety of business settings, including advertising, public relations, and more.

Ramona Maharaj decided to move away from the City of Hamilton to continue her education in the English discipline because she wanted to improve her chances of working as an English professor one day. Maharaj has long dreamt of contributing her thoughts and instruction concerning contemporary American literature.

English majors can start a lucrative and promising career in advertising or public relations, as long as they are prepared to start at an entry-level position. English members have to complete a master’s degree to teach at the college level, but a bachelor’s degree in English is a great first step.

ADVANTAGES OF TEACHING ADULT LEARNERS

Teaching adults can be rewarding to the teacher. At the very core, you are dealing with individuals who have lives outside the classroom. While this can pose a challenge when it comes to attendance, adult learners also come equipped with learning tools and experience that present advantages to teachers. As an ESL teacher, you can use these benefits to help you make the learning experience a better one.

Ramona Maharaj City of Hamilton

Autonomous learners

Adult learners have, to varying extents, a set of learning skills acquired from earlier schooling experience. At the very least, they have the skills to enable them take notes, ask relevant questions and initiate dialogue. They know the benefits of regular class attendance and the importance of being committed and organized.

While many adult learners might not have loads of free time on their hands, they will benefit from having mentally-challenging assignments.

Intrinsic motivation

Many adults who enroll for courses make a conscious decision to do so. They might have varying needs, but they are motivated to become better at what the course offers. Whether it’s an English course or a postgraduate degree, adult learners have the internal motivation to go through with the course.

As a teacher, the best way to keep this motivation alive is by considering their goals when setting class tasks and activities. This way, you can come up with tasks that best fit the end goal, like planning job interview role-playing activities for English learners who want to speak the language in their business endeavors.

Ramona Maharaj City of Hamilton understands what it takes to keep adult learners motivated. She has years of experience as an ESL teacher and currently works in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

HIKING ETIQUETTE

In life, rules are set to help govern the activities of individuals and make things more enjoyable for all involved. While there are written rules that maintain, unwritten ones such as not cutting in line at a bank or keeping the elbows off the table while eating enforce etiquette for different settings.

Ramona Maharaj City of Hamilton

When it comes to hiking, there are rules that make the experience pleasant for everyone. Among the most common practices are:

Plan ahead

Research on the region you plan to hike and the weather conditions common to the area. Prepare for any weather surprises and minimize any impact by hiking as a small group.

Waste disposal

Whatever you bring with you ensure you take it out. This includes biodegradable waste such as fruit peelings and food wrappers and containers. Also, pick up any trash you come across that’s left by other hikers. Human waste should be buried in 6-8 inch deep holes that are not near any water source.

Look, but don’t take!

You can admire nature and all it has to offer, but leave everything in its natural habitat. Avoid picking rocks or plucking leaves and plants from their natural settings.

Don’t feed the animal

While many animals will not be particularly inclined to show themselves, there are some that will want a sniff of what you eat. Resist the urge to give them food as it will only disrupt their hunting habits.

Walk through puddles

Avoid walking around puddles or any obstacles that cause the trail to widen. Taking shortcuts or going around a puddle is not good for the sustainability of the trail.

Ramona Maharaj, from the City of Hamilton, has been hiking for years. While teaching in South America, she had the chance to enjoy some of the continent’s scenic hiking trails.

HOW TO TRAVEL SAFE

Unwary tourists make easy targets for con artists and thieves because they stand out in foreign places. While most areas you travel to are likely to be safe, it helps when you take the necessary steps and precautions to ensure your safety. Talk to friends and colleagues who've been to the location before, consult with the travel agency, and keep an eye on any official communication.

Ramona Maharaj City of Hamilton

Learn about the place

Before you leave, know how the particular destination is faring, especially on the economic front. In many instances, Americans are used to a higher standard of living than some of the places they visit. Where unemployment and petty crime are an issue, be particularly careful with your luggage.

Leave the expensive stuff

You make yourself a target when you wear expensive jewelry and watches or carry fancy cameras and other digital equipment in the open. What might be normal to carry around back home may not be wise to display on your trip. Focus on enjoying the trip and leave the expensive stuff at home.

Be wise with cash

Split your money so you don’t have to carry all your cash or travel cards in one purse. Take advantage of any hotel safes to store your emergency card and only carry the amount of cash you estimate will be enough for the day. Should you lose one card, you will still have the means to make purchases with what you didn’t carry with you.

Digital copies

Before you travel, make digital copies of your travel documents and visas. It’s easy to have them stored on a cloud server that you can access should the originals get lost on your trip.

Ramona Maharaj City of Hamilton from the City of Hamilton has spent a big part of her teaching career overseas and is well versed in some of the ways to stay safe while traveling.

SLEEP BETTER IN UNFAMILIAR LOCATIONS

Trying to catch sleep during travel doesn't come easy for many people. Sure, there are people who have no problem falling asleep anywhere, but others need to feel more comfortable before enjoying a good night's sleep. Whether it's the kids in the next room making a racket or the bellhop's luggage cart squeaking its way across the hall, here is how you enjoy sleeping in an unfamiliar location.

Ramona Maharaj City of Hamilton

Do Your Research

On some occasions, there’s no avoiding noise. The hotel may be located next to a construction site, which might mean jackhammering and drills sounding off late in the night. Or the street in front of the hotel may be home to late night speed races from the local community. Before you book the room, do a bit of research.

Good Mattress

Hotels know when they can offer a good bed, and they'll advertise it for all the world to know. When a hotel markets its heavenly beds, know that they aren't doing it for show. It might be a bit expensive, but at least you can rest easy knowing you won't have to toss and turn all night looking for the perfect spot.

Usual Routine

The Tangible Perks

There are certain things that teachers get to benefit from their jobs that most don’t. For example, having extended summer, winter and spring breaks are something that most private sector workers forget about the second they graduate and enter the workforce.

Getting to Know Your Students

While it is often looked down upon for teachers to go out for a night on the town with their students, the truth is that they don’t need to in order to learn about their students’ lives. Just like learning a subject is for students, teachers learn about their students as they interact in the classroom; which actually paints a more vivid picture of a student’s personal life than it may seem.

Becoming a Better Person

Teaching ultimately makes you a better person, too. This is because teaching opens you up to meeting a wide variety of people with an even wider variety of personal issues that they individually deal with. This helps you become more empathetic towards certain situations as well as helping overall in making you a more open-minded individual.

Ramona Maharaj from the City of Hamilton - Teaching in Argentina

One of  Ramona Maharaj City of Hamilton most fulfilling experiences in South America as well as throughout her entire career as an ESL teacher was her time spent in Argentina. After working in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for six months, she had adapted to South American life but was still facing one large issue: she didn’t speak a word of Spanish. Her Portuguese helped a little bit; but it was clear that her knowledge of Korean, Japanese and Chinese would be no good here. As she got settled into her school in Buenos Aires, one of the first things she did was inquire about finding Spanish lessons.

That is where Raul came into play. He was a co-teacher who had spent time in the United States as a Spanish teacher, but was now teaching English in his home country. He volunteered to give Ramona lessons, and the two of them became very close.

Raul, who to this day stays in touch with Ramona, helped her learn Spanish, among a few other staples of Argentinean culture. He taught her how to tango dance by taking her to lessons in San Telmo, where the dance is said to have originated. Raul’s help was pivotal in getting Ramona in tune with Latin American culture, which helped her throughout the rest of the continent and even in her job today in Florida.

Ramona Maharaj from the City of Hamilton - Proper Hiking Gear

Ramona Maharaj from the City of Hamilton is an outdoors enthusiast who has been all over the world; and has learned that the best possible way to experience an area is by doing so on foot. She became an avid hiker throughout her travels because she fell in love with the simplicity of finding beautiful and unique spots in an area by using the most intimate form of travel to get there. But before you tie your shoes and go on a hike, there are some proper essentials that you should bring in order to avoid any day-ruining scenarios.

Water

Hydration is important n any type of hike, but especially when you find yourself in high elevation areas because the water will evaporate from your body faster, causing you to dehydrate faster. Make sure to bring appropriate levels of water for every hike.

Comfortable Shoes

When it comes to hiking shoes, comfort and durability are the two most important factors to analyze. Make sure you get something that provides cushion for your feet and won’t cause any blisters; and make sure that the shoes will, at the very least, make it through that particular hike.

When hiking, footwear and hydration should be your top two concerns. If you plan on going for extended hours, then perhaps bring some trail mix or something to keep your energy and metabolism up too.
